Why following trading signals doesn't make you a better trader

The notification arrives and something happens that is rarely mentioned: you feel lighter. The decision was made by someone else, and for a few minutes the weight of making a mistake is no longer entirely yours. It’s a pleasant feeling, and honest to admit. The problem comes months later, when you realize that in the meantime you’ve made dozens of mistakes trades and you’ve become incapable of managing any more.

A signal conveys information, not the ability to hold it.

Anyone who shares an operational directive passes you the content of a decision. They don’t pass on the difficult part: staying firm when the position goes against you, not adding when it’s right, closing where you had planned to close and not ten minutes earlier because you couldn’t bear to watch it anymore.

That part is not informative; it is behavioral. It is not conveyed through a message, because it is not contained in the message. It is contained in what you do in the following minutes, and those minutes remain entirely yours even when the initial decision was not.

Delegation removes the burden of choice, not the responsibility of execution

Relying on an external source takes something away from you: The blame for having chosen. The rest of it remains where it was.

This is where the dynamics differ from the herd effect, where the push is horizontal and comes from those around you. In the case of signals, the push is verticalSomeone is treated as more knowledgeable, and that’s enough to disable verification. There’s no need for that person to convince you; you’re not evaluating an argument. You’re buying the Possibility of not being evaluated.

The outcome is yours; the decision was not yours, and from there you learn nothing.

When it trade goes well, the credit goes to the source. When it goes wrong, the explanation comes quickly and always the same: you arrived late, you closed early, you didn’t follow the instructions to the letter.

Both readings are comfortable, and both of them leave you Exactly where you were. The first one convinces you that the solution is to find better sources. The second one convinces you that the problem was accuracy, so next time you will follow it more precisely. Neither of them leads you to look at what you did, and this selection of convenient explanations has a name: it is the same mechanism of the confirmation bias.

Those who follow an external source continue to decide, only without rules.

The idea that following means not deciding does not hold up on first inspection. You decide which directions to take and which to let pass. You decide with which exposure to enter. You decide whether to stay within until the end or exit first. You decide what to do when three close-in directions arrive and the day has already gone wrong.

They are your decisions, and they are the most delicate ones, because they happen without any prior planning. no criteria declared before. No one writes them, no one reads them. They are the same decisions that in the trading activity autonomous produce a position size decisive decision from the gut, with the difference that here they remain invisible: the feeling of following an alien method covers up the fact that the only method at play is the one you are following. improvising You.

After months, there remains a chronology, not a behavior.

A path that builds something leaves something behind. reusable tracks: what do you do when the day starts badly, when you stop, what have you stopped doing compared to a year ago? These are things that remain yours even when you change tools, markets, or approach.

A path built on the execution of other people’s instructions leaves a chronology of trades. The day the source stops publishing, changes its style, or simply makes a mistake in a series, you don't have nothing from which to start again, because you don't have never exercised the part that would serve you now. Addiction is not a moral judgment; it is a description: the ability to decide has not formed because it has not been used.

What remains when the source is gone

The useful question is not whether a source is good or not.. It is . What remains of you when that source is not there. What remains is built first, in a lucid mind, in the form of limits What you decide: how far you are willing to go in a day, what happens after a negative streak, when the session is closed regardless of what happens on the screen. One daily loss limit Deciding in advance does not decide for you where to enter, but it is yours, and continues to valere when no one is telling you anything.
